The Empress is a captivating German Netflix Original historical romantic drama series. This remarkable production is the brainchild of Katharina Eyssen and is inspired by the early life and love story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The series boasts a talented team of co-writers, including Bernd Lange, Janna Maria Nandzik, and Lena Stahl, while the co-directors, Florian Cossen and Katrin Gebbe, have masterfully brought the narrative to life.

It took just over six weeks from its initial release for Netflix to confirm the renewal of ‘The Empress’ for a second season, making the announcement on November 9th, 2022.

The story of Elisabeth’s life is a story of the power of love, but also the courage to be different and the hope for a better future. And that’s what we need right now. What to expect from The Empress Season 2

The narrative of Empress Elisabeth’s captivating life has only begun to unfold, leaving many more decades of intriguing history to explore.

Now expecting her first child, Elisabeth is on the brink of motherhood, about to give birth to her first of four children, Archduchess Sophie of Austria. While this moment should have been among the happiest in Elisabeth’s life, it marked the start of a conflict with her mother-in-law, Princess Sophie. The latter believed Elisabeth was too young to raise the children and, against the Empress’s wishes, took it upon herself to oversee their upbringing.

After months of persistent pleas, Elisabeth succeeded in convincing her husband, Emperor Franz, to allow her to take her children with her on her journeys. Tragically, during one of these travels in Hungary, her daughter, Archduchess Sophie, succumbed to a severe fever.

The loss of Archduchess Sophie only intensified her grandmother Princess Sophie’s determination to be the primary caregiver for the Emperor’s grandchildren, rather than the Empress.

As a result, all of Elisabeth’s surviving children grew up with a distant mother. Though not unkind, Elisabeth’s demeanor was notably “unmotherly.”

Emperor Franz, on the other hand, was impacted by the birth of his first child and the actions of his wife, which contributed to quelling nationalist and revolutionary sentiments. However, tensions across Europe were inexorably leading Austria toward war.

The upcoming second season of ‘The Empress’ is expected to delve into Elisabeth’s pregnancy, her initial years as a mother, and the heart-wrenching loss of her firstborn child.
